When your hybrid is due
- First eight model years: newer hybrids skip the renewal smog check and pay a smog abatement fee with their DMV renewal instead. Add eight to the model year to find the first year you'll need a check (a 2020 hybrid: 2020 + 8 = 2028).
- After that: a smog check every other year to renew registration.
- Your notice decides: your DMV renewal notice says whether you need a check ("Smog Certification Required") and whether it must be at a STAR station.

- If the 12-volt battery was recently disconnected or replaced, see the note below before you book.

You leave with a vehicle inspection report showing the result and any open safety recalls.
A note on batteries and warning lights
After a battery disconnect or replacement, drive normally for a week or two so the readiness monitors can reset before the test. Clearing codes resets them too. With the check engine light on, a vehicle will not pass.
If your hybrid fails
Repairs are done at a test-and-repair or repair-only station of your choice; find a licensed one with BAR's Auto Shop Locator. Some emissions repairs may be covered by your manufacturer's warranty, so check your owner's manual. Then bring it back within 30 calendar days for the $30 smog retest: $21.75, plus the $8.25 certificate if it passes.

Yes. Hybrids need smog checks on the same schedule as gasoline cars.
My hybrid is a 2021. When is its first smog check?
Add eight to the model year: 2021 + 8 = 2029. Until then you pay a smog abatement fee with your DMV renewal.
Is my plug-in or electric car exempt?
Fully electric vehicles are exempt. If your car has a gasoline engine at all, call us and we'll confirm.
Does my hybrid need a STAR station?
Your DMV renewal notice may require a STAR station. We are STAR certified.
Can you repair my hybrid if it fails?
No. We're a test-only station. Repairs are done at a station of your choice.
