What the report tells you
Every inspection ends with a vehicle inspection report. It shows the results and whether the car passed or failed, and it lists any open safety recalls on the vehicle. Keep it. The repair station will want to see it, and it tells you what the retest has to clear.
Your next steps
Read the report with us
Ask anything; we'll walk through each item before you leave.
Choose a repair station
Repairs are done at a test-and-repair or repair-only station of your choice. You can search for a licensed one with BAR's Auto Shop Locator.
Check your warranty
Some emissions repairs may be covered by your manufacturer's warranty. Check your owner's manual.
Give the car time
If the repair meant disconnecting the battery or clearing codes, drive normally for a week or two so the readiness monitors can reset.
Come back for the retest
The $30 smog retest is $21.75, plus the $8.25 certificate if the car passes, within 30 calendar days of the failed inspection here.

What to bring to the retest
- The car, with the repair finished.
- The failed inspection report.
- Your DMV renewal notice or the documents DMV sent you.
Why the station matters
If your DMV renewal notice says the car must be certified at a STAR station, the retest has to happen at one. Vehicles identified as gross polluters also have to be certified at a STAR station or a state Referee. Our Garden Grove station is STAR certified, so neither requirement sends you somewhere else.
Makes we test
Lexus, Toyota and Honda top our Magnolia St job photos, but every make gets the same state test. See the brand list on our vehicles we smog check page.

Frequently asked questions
Why did my car fail?
Your vehicle inspection report lists what didn't pass. We'll explain it, and the repair station you choose will take it from there.
Will the check engine light fail my car?
Yes. With the check engine light on, a vehicle will not pass.
Can you fix my car?
No. We're a test-only station: we do smog checks but not emissions repairs. Find a licensed repair station with BAR's Auto Shop Locator.
How much is the retest?
If the car failed its paid inspection here: $21.75, plus the $8.25 certificate on a pass ($30 total), within 30 calendar days. Fail again and that retest is $21.75.
Does a failed test show anything besides emissions?
The report also lists any open safety recalls on the vehicle.
