Which diesels are in the program
- In the program: model year 1998 or later and rated at 14,000 lb GVWR or under.
- Exempt: diesels from 1997 and older, and diesels over 14,000 lb GVWR.
- No newer-vehicle break: diesels get no newer-model-year exemption, so even a recent diesel can need a check.
The GVWR is usually printed on the label inside the driver's door jamb. Have it handy when you call.

Approve the estimate
before the inspection starts.
Inspection and report
You get a vehicle inspection report showing whether the vehicle passed, plus any open safety recalls.
If it fails
Emissions repairs are done at a test-and-repair or repair-only station of your choice; BAR's Auto Shop Locator lists licensed ones. We're test-only and don't repair. Once the work is done, the $30 smog retest applies within 30 calendar days: $21.75, plus the $8.25 certificate on a pass. If the check engine light is on, a vehicle will not pass, so make sure it's off before you return.
